What I’ve been up to.

The last time I blogged, it was a Sunday, and I didn’t know what to do with my craft itch. I ended up making a mini book, from Erin Zamrzla, and it was a lot of fun!

It’s a really cute little book, and if I didn’t already have a travel Moleskine for New York, I would be taking that with me (Yes, I’m going to New York for the first time with my hubby tomorrow!), I would be taking this cute little book for notes and to stick ephemera into. It’s a great size; big enough to write comfortable in, but small enough to stick into your purse.

I also recently signed up for Studio Calico’s Happy Little Moments class, as did my mom. She’s really getting the scrap bug like I did, and I love that! We got our kits, and got together at her house last Monday to start work:

After opening the box and just getting started...

Half way through....what a happy mess!

My sweet mom; we had a blast together doing this project!

We didn’t finish, but I promise myself to do that and then photograph my finished book and post it here. I’ll also have New York photos to put together into some sort of cohesive book, and I’m debating how, but my mom did get me a nice Smash-style book from Fancy Pants that looks like it just might fit the ticket. We’ll see.

And, as for Project Life, I’m fairly caught up, except for today and yesterday, but this is what I have that’s been photographed so far:

Project life, week 11

And I have more filled in since then, so next time I post, I will include that. I’ll also have lots of exciting posts from New York, as well. Cannot wait!! My shop will be closed starting this evening so I won’t have to worry about incoming orders, but I’ll open it back up on Saturday, March 31. Take care everyone, and have a great evening!

Today is the kind of day I absolutely love: I’m off work, I got to sleep in a little, I feel good, I have no specific plans and I have an itch to be creative! The only problem I have at this time is deciding what! I have so many projects hanging on the sideline waiting for a day like this, it’s difficult to choose…

  • Do I want to learn a new stitch and create a cute little notebook?  [Get this kit here]

Kit from Erinzam on Etsy

  • Do I want to do Mou Saha’s self-paced class I purchased on Big Picture Classes? [Get this class here]

"Grateful Every Day", by Mou Saha (I even have Gelatos for the drawings)

  • Do I want to finally do that Valentine’s themed book?

Kits by Elle's Studio and Saturday AM Vintage (both no longer available, I'm sorry to say)

  • What about taking Ali Edwards’ Storyology Class?

  • …Or Ali’s Five Class?

No matter what I choose to do today, it won’t be a waste of time, and it will be lots of fun. So, daylight’s burning, and since it is Daylight Savings Time, I better get moving. I’ll be back later with whatever I come up with!

-But! I am caught up with Project Life so far for this month of March (except for today, of course):

Days 1-6

I just love adding in these notes we leave for each other!

Days 7-9

Yesterday, the 10th.

For those days I have more than one photo, or I have extra journaling, I use Cathy Zielske’s Tiny Templates, available at Designer Digitals. She has 4 different variations, and I highly recommend them!

Thanks for stopping by!

Never Say No To A Challenge, or a giveaway!

I love shopping on Etsy. One of my favorites in Saturday Morning Vintage. I just love suspending time “hanging around” looking at the pretty goodies and dreaming. I buy things from the shop now and then, but I admit to being a hoarder….I’m afraid to use things for fear I’ll need it for something special later! But, I’ve been kicking around some ideas lately for a journal; I’m into journals more that layouts, lately, and I’m going through some personal stuff right now and I thought a hand-made journal would be nice to document this journey I’m on. And who would happen to contact me about a scrap challenge right at the perfect time? That Goddess of all that is vintage and beautiful, the lovely Xenia, owner of SaurdayAMVintage! (Yes, Jennifer, there really are fairy godmothers!). Xenia has done this before on her blog in the past where she has fun challenges for her readers. She sends them a package of left-over scraps, and let’s them create whatever they want. I say, bring it on!
Heres the package I received:

I love the way she packages everything! I have an idea for a journal I’d like to make, and I have a handmade plexiglass clipboard that I’ve been wanting to use. The board measures 6×8″‘ and I put a two-ring binder mechanism on it to me different. I the to my brother Rob’s permission to use his photos because I didn’t have anything appropriate that would fit what I wanted to do, whereas Rob has a wonderful way of projecting symbolism and feelings just emanate from the photos. That’s what I wanted. So I went to work and quickly discovered how fragile vintage papers really are! Thank goodness for washi tape and staples. Some pages became collages as portions of the pages fell apart! Not a problem for me, it simply amped up my challenge mode! I sewed, stitched, colored, taped, punched, and hand typed on the papers, having a great time all the while. The final product (with the disappointing title that is not easy to see…)

The entire journal may be seen here

Thanks for this challenge! And to anyone out there, do have piles of left-over scraps taking up space in your craft area? Grab them, find some photos, and see what you can do! I invite anyone to bring your photos in the comments, and I will reward you with a free fiveaway!
Thanks for visiting!

“The Book of Junk Mail”

Since my mom retired last year, she’s had more time on her hands to do fun things. Like scrapbook. I cannot tell you how thrilling it is for me to get to share my passion with one of the single most important people in my life. It means so much to me when she emails photos of whatever project she’s working on (for constructive criticism or a little pat on the back); texts me about new web sites she’s just discovered and really excited about, as well as special sales and deals; or phoned me to tell me she is at such-n-such store finding so many cute things “to die for”, and I really need to go look when I can. It’s quite endearing and sweet, and I love how much closer we’ve gotten because of this new-found bond. We have agreed to get together at least once a month (she lives in my hometown, just about an hour south from where I am) to have our ‘scrapbook dates’. These have become very important to us: we take turns going to each other’s home, show and tell what we’ve been doing, talk scrap, and brainstorm ideas, then go shopping to our local craft stores to shop our little hearts out. Oh, and then we have to stop and have lunch so we can oooh and aaaah over what we’ve purchased, trade ideas and inspiration, talk about Project Life, and of course Pinterest (got Mom hooked on both of those recently, too!). By the time we get back to one of our homes, it’s getting late in the day, and we may manage to do a little bit of scrapping….opening the packages, planning what we’ll make, and trying out one stamp. We love it. It’s just her and I, no husbands, no children (excluding yours truly). It’s invigorating, and by the time we get to our respective homes, we’re bursting at the seams to scrap our little hearts out. She’s got more time than I have now, so I don’t have as much to show yet (although my Project Life album has not been ignored yet), but recently she was telling me about a fun idea she came up with, and couldn’t wait to show me. She took the box that her Project Life kit came in, and cut it up to make pages. She then took all the junk mail she received on that given day, and collaged pieces of the mail here and there with words of wisdom……for me. She presented it to me last weekend (our most recent ‘date’), and I was floored. I had no idea this project was intended for me….I know I have been needing a bit of cheering up lately, but I didn’t realize that she took it to heart. So, here is a very special book made from my mother’s heart to add to, to make mine, and to treasure always. Mom, you know I will.

I love you, Mom. Thanks a million.

It takes a village….of seven gypsies.

Happy New Year!! To start off my year, I have several projects in mind. I have my 2012 One Little Word and Journey to Happiness: What Matters Most (both at Big Picture Classes); A Photo-A-Day (from Studio Calico) and Project Life. I also want to learn some more book-binding techniques (stitching), and I have been wanting to make a village like the one I saw on 7Gypsies’ blog. I am rather behind on most everything already, but I did manage to create my village this weekend. I love it. It is faaaaaar from perfect, or even good, but I still like it’s quaint charm, and it does wonders for one of our bookshelves.

I kindly thank my dear husband for his help in cutting the davey board to make the houses; that was not an easy task. I used left-over book boards (aka “davey board”) from when I made books earlier in the year, and I purchased most of the products from Blue Moon Scrapbooking, and this is what I used:

  • All papers from the Off The Wall collection by 7 Gypsies
  • 7 Gypsies Artist Printer’s Tray Display trim loops and hooks in antique silver
  • 7 Gypsies antique silver ring book knob
  • A 7 Gypsies antique silver key
  • 7 Gypsies scrapbook hardware, Gypsy
  • 7 Gypsies scrapbook hardware gears, Gems
  • 7 Gypsies scrapbook hardware gears, Industrial
  • 7 Gypsies display trim school rulers, Wood
  • 7 Gypsies metal page edges in antique silver, straight
  • 7 Gypsies metal page edges in antique brass, scallop (I had these already)
  • Maya Road chipboard windows
  • Tim Holtz distress ink, Walnut Stain
  • davey board (book board, but thick chipboard will also work)

I used Tacky Glue, and matte medium gel as adhesives, cardstock scraps and a really good industrial strength utility knife. I chose my own sizes and shapes, and  the instructions are here.

See you later for more updates on more projects!

Us 3.

I had a dream, the other night, after looking at Studio Calico‘s newest kit…The vision of Ormolu‘s number tags was in my head, and in my dreams, I saw a vision of the number 2 tag with spray mist in white on it. The minute I woke up, I tore into my Ormolu drawer, and found the tags I had…which did not have the number two. I think I used it. But, I found the number 3, and while the dream was still fresh in my mind (am I that crazy?), I got out my Mr. Huey’s white mist, and went to work.

2" circle punched from scrap kraft paper

I wanted to use the open ’3′ on the tag as a template, so I punched a piece of scrap kraft paper to a similar size, which is 2″.

Putting them together,

I would normally have used repositionable tape to hole the pieces together while I sprayed.  I didn’t, but I would highly recommend it.

I like the look of the spray with the spottiness, but if you don’t , I would paint the tags with an acrylic paint and brush for a different, less mottled look. This is okay for me.

I then gave myself a personal challenge: find 3 unused papers, and 3 embellishments to match, and make a layout with these products. I wanted to use some of Amy Tangerine‘s papers, and more Ormolu embellishments in similar colors. Uncanny, how they matched so well.

This is what I came up with, with the idea of 3 in my mind.

Thanks go to Ormolu and Amy Tangerine for the inspiration! See you soon with the December Daily posts!

I am so very thankful.

Redefining the ‘die-hard scrapbooker’.

Yes, that’s me. I work full-time at a hospital; difficult, stressful, demanding;  my idea of relaxation is coming home to my bedroom (where my ‘studio’ is) to scrapbook. Case in point: I got off a night shift last night, not my usual shift, and what did I do when I came home?  Sleep? No. I looked for something pretty to create. Tired? Shmired!! I wanted to scrap. My husband once told me that I have an addiction, and I think he’s right. But, there could be worse addictions, okay?

December is right around the corner, and for once, I really want to make a December Daily. I want to enjoy and appreciate this holiday season in any way, shape and form it arrives. I want every day to count, and I want to document it all. I have a Christmas tree (thank you, Mom!!); decorations (hand-made); and ideas for some really wonderful things I can do to make our home comfy, cozy, and delightfully festive. It’s been a long time coming, and I am really excited about the fact that I am so inspired and motivated. Yes, I do have to work on Christmas Eve and Christmas day (after all, cardiac disease doesn’t take any holidays, so, why should I?), but that won’t diminish my holiday joy. I am so grateful to have what I have, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Except one. Silly? Yes. Important? No…but to me, it was. I love stars. I’ve said that before, but when I saw the canvas star on Ali EdwardsDecember Daily part II photos (Nov. 4, 2011), I fell in love. That is so me. I immediately looked online for some of her beautiful embellishments to go on my own December Daily (thank you Ali for the links!), but when it came to ordering the canvas star, I was out of luck. And I wanted that star! No emails ever arrived to announce that this particular product is back in stock, so today, of all days, I needed to get into a closet I rarely frequent, and found some duck cloth canvas sitting there from I-don’t-know-when. I have my star! was my first thought. I know how to sew. I have a star die (to go with my trusty Sizzix Big Kick). I have the right material. Nothing was going to hold me back. My poor husband didn’t even know I was home before I was getting things going.

My inspiration, from Ali Edwards.

My own humble version....

...inspired by Ali and ready for my own December Daily

Not knowing that Scrapbook.com now has these canvas stars back in stock, I made a lot, and I made them to sell on my Etsy shop to share with all of you. Who knows how many of you were looking for this, and couldn’t find them, either!

I am so looking forward to this holiday season, and I hope every one of you reading this has an a beautiful season as well! Okay, time to get some shut-eye before the next shift. Zzzz.

A new trend: white on kraft

I am loving a look I came up with while creating Christmas cards and tags: white ink (with snowflakes or stars) on kraft paper. I stamp images onto a kraft tag or card and emboss with Stampendous detail white embossing powder. The look, to me, is very Nordic, simple, earthy, and classic. I can’t get enough of it right now. I am hoping you like it as well, too, because I have some items for sale on Etsy that are created with this beautiful style in mind.

White Noel Christmas cards

Snowflake stickers

small white star tags

medium snowflake tags

scrap paper chain

There’s no end to what you can do with these items. I will be starting my December Daily in a couple of weeks, and I intend to use these tags and stickers to embellish my album; the cards I’ve made (not showing are the red star and green tree cards) are meant to be simple in order to let your words and sentiments shine. Let your Christmas be merry and bright with white-on-kraft by Retrospect!

Using scraps to make a paper chain.

I’m working hard this evening in my ‘workshop’ (just like Santa’s…) creating Christmas cards and tags for my shop, Retrospect, on Etsy. When I ran out of 8.5×11 kraft sheets, I got out my 12×12 stash, and started cutting away, to get more of the necessary size. I don’t like wasting things, especially scraps, and while tossing some 1×8.5″ strips into the trash, I came up with an idea to use them instead of throwing them away: make a paper chain! I grabbed those babies out (no worries; my trash bin is entirely paper and bits of ribbon) and went to work.

I have some snowflake stamps from Stampin’ Up! that I had been using, and noticed that the smallest stamp would fit the 1″ size of the strips. I thought it would be nice to stamp an image onto the strip to make a design; right now, I’m working with kraft paper for my projects, and I am really into white-on-kraft with snowflakes or stars…kind of a Nordic look which I am loving. I used a white ink pad to stamp the images, then I sprinkled Stampendous! “Stamp-n-Stuff” in an opaque white embossing powder over the stamped images, and then heated each strip so the white would stand out a little more. The fun thing about this is that it’s easy enough for the kids to do while you’re making your own things!

I can easily see my 11-year-old stamping paper strips (but if we want them embossed, I would do the heating) to her heart’s content. I chose the white, but of course it would also look pretty with red or green, (or any combination) and any of your smaller size Christmas stamps. I only had about 14 scraps, but of course the more you have the longer the chain.

I stapled each strip into a ring, just like I remember doing back in Kindergarten…and yes, it was just as much fun doing it again today!

My daughter didn’t get to make this one (homework to do…) but I’ll be sure and have her help with more of these in the future that we can add to this one. I have no idea how long it will end up being, or where we’ll put it, but that’s the easy part, and we’ll love having it be a part of our holiday festivities. What a cheap decoration, too! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go find my shop vac (powder everywhere, what a mess…). Come on back in the next few days when I show you my Christmas holiday cards that I’ll be selling at Retrospect! Thanks for stopping by!

Seeing stars.

I love stars. I always have; looking at the stars in the sky as a child, and seeing anything shaped like a star now, catches my eye. I made some new tags for Christmas with stars, and more in a bigger size, with snowflakes (almost like a star, right?).

My goal tomorrow is to use my tags in some projects. See you tomorrow! Happy Holidays!
