The days of our lives…

Being that I had a day off today from work, I was able to get some things accomplished for the final week of Yesterday/Today. As I finished the last page, I took out the album I completed for the first time I took this class in 2009, and compared the two results. I like this year’s better, overall, but my journaling seemed more thoughtful before. Never rush a story. Here are weeks 11 and 12:

Week 11, 2 pages
Week 12, front
back

I usually have so much stuff sitting around my desk that I don’t know what to do with. This week was perfect for that. Most of the time I think I should keep something, but I don’t know why or where to put it. I found the place here. These divided page protectors are perfect for saving those photos, ephemera, or little items you can’t bear to get rid of, but you can’t really put into a scrapbook layout. It becomes a snapshot of your life today, right now (I wouldn’t advise saving food wrappers, though).

The other thing I did today involved emails from my brother. We both have accounts with Flickr and Picasa, so whenever he uploads photos to these sites, I receive notice, and I get to enjoy the great shots he takes. I think my brother is a fantastic photographer. I love to download copies to my computer, and create layouts of my nephews. I don’t see them very often, so it’s not only a treat, but a way to stay in touch with what they’re up to. I really didn’t know what I was doing with this layout; I just added things as I went along without a plan, which I do not recommend. It was an experiment, and I am not used to using so much embellishments, so I’m not sure if I like it or not. If anyone out there reading this has an opinion, it is welcome.

Thanks for tuning in to this episode of “This Is Your Life!” Until next time, America!

Documenting ordinary days

Have you ever thought to document one full day? Try it sometime. Pick a random day, get your camera out (or just use your phone’s camera), and capture your day. What do you actually do all day? What happens, and how much time do you really spend on ordinary things? I found out about that yesterday, which marked Week 9 in my Yesterday/Today class by Ali Edwards. I didn’t realize just how much time I spend on the computer, and little moments spent suddenly had more impact and meaning to me, especially seeing it captured in a photo.

I have often found myself wondering where the time goes, and what exactly did I do on such-and-such a day. If you do something like this, just for fun, put it in your scrapbook, and I can imagine you’ll be amazed at how you’ve lived, years from now. Your children will get a kick out of it, too! Perhaps it will do nothing more for you than to make you think about your day, your time, your life. That’s good enough. Life is short, after all, hold on to what you can (that’s one of my biggest reasons for scrapbooking ;-) ). Here’s another random, ordinary moment that I am so glad I caught with my camera; my daughter is growing by leaps and bounds, and in just a few years I will look back on this simple moment with such fondness and love.

Quintessentially you.

Enjoy your weekend, and if you document any of it, have fun!

Looking at a perspective…

There are so many reasons why I scrapbook, but one of the best ones is that it makes me pay attention to what is going on around me. As some of you may know, I am currently taking a class at Big Picture Classes called “Yesterday/Today” that is taught by Ali Edwards (I idolize her). This week we are looking at our perspectives on life. Where are we in the present? What is our present life like? It’s interesting to see others’ perspectives as well, which is why I also enjoy reading others’ blogs. Life is so unique and complicated; it never gets boring, does it?
